SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD

What is a Special Enrollment Period?

Special Enrollment Period is a time outside of the Open Enrollment  Period during which you and your family may be able to sign up for  health coverage. You may qualify for special enrollment up to 60 days  following certain life events that involve a change in family status  (for example, marriage or birth of a child) or loss of other health  coverage. Job-based plans must provide a special enrollment period of 30  days.

Life Events that Qualify You for Special Enrollment

  • If you have a baby, adopt a  child, or put your child into foster care: Your coverage can start the  day of the event โ€” even if you enroll in the plan up to 60 days  afterward
  • Changes in your income that affect current health coverage
  • Become a U.S. citizen
  • Change of dependency status of someone on your plan
  • Turning 26 or older and aging off your parent's plan
  • Gaining membership in a  federally-recognized tribe or status as an Alaska Native Claims  Settlement Act (ANCSA) Corporation shareholder
  • If you get married, lose health coverage, or move to a new state
  • Leave incarceration
  • Death of a covered member of your household
  • AmeriCorps members starting or ending their service
